INTENT
At Highfields Primary Academy, our history curriculum intends to inspire children to want to know more about the past and to think and act as Historians; help children to understand their place in the world and develop a sense of who they are locally, nationally and globally and inspire children to think and act like historians-promoting curiosity and fascination.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our history curriculum is based around these threshold concepts for children at Highfields to:
- Investigate and interpret the past
- Build an overview of world history
- Understand chronology
- Communicate historically
Our History curriculum has been constructed around these thresholds to ensure that history is taught in a spiral, not linear, manner. History is either taught weekly or in blocks, this is decided by each teacher, each term. The sequence of learning is carefully planned to ensure they are appropriately pitched and challenging and provide opportunities to explore the past. The sequential planning demonstrates progression building upon prior knowledge and enables children to apply this to new learning. Children are encouraged to make links across the curriculum as appropriate. Timelines are used to ensure that chronology is embedded so the children understand how different periods of history link together. Key vocabulary is incorporated alongside primary and secondary sources of evidence to help bring history to life.
IMPACT
The impact of our history curriculum can be seen by children demonstrating an enthusiasm for the subject. They can talk confidently about their learning. Historical vocabulary is used with increasing confidence and, as historians, our children can use their skills to ask questions, evaluate evidence and draw conclusions.
