Highfields Primary Academy Curriculum
At Highfields Primary Academy, we follow the national curriculum but is is unique because it is designed to meet the needs and interests of our pupils and reflects our school values, which
are derived from our understanding of our students and our beliefs about high quality education:
- independence
- diversity
- initiative
- communication
- problem solving/reasoning
- intrinsic motivation
- culture
- the arts
- citizenship
We believe learning is a change to long term memory. Our aims are to ensure that our pupils experience a wide breadth of study and have, by the end of each key stage, long term memory of an ambitious body of procedural and semantic knowledge. We want our pupils to have a love for learning and be learners for life so we have made our curriculum engaging, relevant and purposeful, providing them with the skills for the next stages of their lives and beyond. We want children to be challenged and reach their potential and beyond.
Within our curriculum we have built in cultural capital opportunities which we believe
gives our pupils the vital background knowledge required to be informed and thoughtful members of our community who understand and believe in British Values.
Each curriculum subject has been designed to ensure progression of both knowledge and skills across each year group. Each subject has clear milestones for Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6. These milestone
includes the procedural and semantic knowledge our pupils need to understand the subjects.
The milestones
in Mathematics have been created for each year group (to reflect the way the National Curriculum is organised) and are based on what we believe to be key learning objectives within the maths schema. In English, milestones
have been created using key performance indicators for each year group. These ensure that progression from year group to year group is clear and that learning is revisited annually.
