My name is Geoff Elton and I have served as a governor for the past 9 years. My election to Chair of Governors took place in November 2008 and I am immensely proud to serve the school in this way.
Highfields Primary School is a happy place where young people feel safe and supported. Our school ethos is based on inclusion and being at the heart of the local community.
Working very closely with the Head Teacher, the Governing Body is ultimately responsible for the curriculum delivery, the school’s finances, personnel matters and also maintaining the school premises. The Head Teacher, with his staff, is responsible for the planning, teaching and monitoring of the National Curriculum and the day-to-day running of the school. The Governors, Head Teacher and staff work in partnership to promote the aims of the school.
The Governing body has the following organisation:
- 1 LA ( Local Authority ) Governor
- 2 Parent Governors
- 2 Staff Governors
- Head teacher
- 5 Co-opted Governors
- 2 Foundation Governors
The Head Teacher attends all of the Governors’ meetings and is a full member of the Governing Body. Governors serve for four years; all parents with a child at the school are entitled to stand for election for Parent Governor and also to vote when elections are held.
I am very proud to work with my fellow governors who all contribute their time free of charge and are all passionate about Highfields and its continued growth in the community.
The Governing Body is immensely proud of what the school consistently achieves and has a real determination to do even better in the future. We have great plans in place to take the school forward in the coming years.
In short, the Governing Body’s aim is to ensure Highfields Primary provides its pupils the best educational start in life helping them to become happy, confident individuals who are given every opportunity to reach their potential.
It is my sincere wish, as Chair of Governors, to continue with the sterling work and efforts put in by all staff and to support all positive moves in all aspects to improve the school.
In addition to our meetings, we spend time in school communicating with staff (both teaching and non-teaching), parents and children to ensure that the policies we adopt are correct and that the staff are given the support they need.
During November 2016 OFSTED visited the school and conducted a 2 day examination of the school, including areas such as safe guarding, teaching practices, governance and behaviour. As you will be aware OFSTED concluded Highfields to be a GOOD school. This outcome is from several hard years of work and dedication to promoting high standards and expectations of everyone. As a governing body we are extremely proud of this achievement. This does not mean we as a governing body will stop to promote these expectations and will consistently ask for better achievements. A Good outcome is a milestone on the continual journey towards excellence.
